As you look around your home to determine what improvement projects need to be completed first, you may be wondering if any work needs to be done to your roof. There could be some signs of damage that require a closer look.
Shingle Damage
Your shingles will be the most visible damage done to your roof. Clear signs that your shingles will require replacement in the near future include buckled and curled shingles, misshapen from their original flat positioning. If you notice that shingles are missing and have fallen since your last visual inspection, you will need to schedule a repair call right away to prevent further damage from being done to your home. Discoloration is another sign that repairs will need to be completed: darker shingles may be a sign of retained moisture, which can erode your roof and lead to leaks. When performing a visual inspection, make sure you check your gutters and downspouts for missing and fallen granules. While a few granules in your drainage here and there aren’t something to be too concerned about, if you are seeing more in the water than on the shingles themselves you have a problem.
Outdoor Wear & Tear
Check your chimney, gutters and outdoor pipes for signs of damage. Since these areas are directly connected to your roof, damage may begin there before spreading across your roof and the rest of your home. You should also examine the paint on your siding for peeling or bubbles, which can be additional signs of moisture problems with your home. If you notice that areas of your roof or attic are beginning to sag, you should contact a contractor immediately for inspection and repair.
